The donut (the part that we eat) for me is the essential part since that is what satisfies our hunger. If we're hungry, do we still need to think about the hole that makes up the donut?
It gives you satisfaction and it gives your brain the sugar to think.

alam niyo ba kung bakit may butas ang donut? i saw on the disney channel (reliable ang source ko, no? hehe) that some captain was steering his ship and he had a round pastry on one hand (do you see where this is going?) but then he had to let go of the pastry because he had to steer his ship one way...so he stuck the round pastry into one of the spokes (?) of the steering wheel and the donut was born!

so ano ang importante dun? edi yung hole. it was so important that the captain had to make it.

and if we wanna connect it with life...

sometimes, we need to empty ourselves to receive something good...labo ba? hehehe...if the pastry was "unholeable" (read: hindi mabutas-butas) then it would've fallen to the ground, failing to fulfill its purpose...which is to provide nutrition and sustenance to the captain...

that "something good" could be God or his blessings. if we let material things complete us then God or his blessings can't come into our lives...

From a culinary standpoint...ring doughnuts are fried products and the hole in the center allows the doughnut to cook quickly and evenly. For handmade doughnuts, the punched out doughnut holes are usually formed back into a ball and rolled out to make more doughnuts etc. etc. etc.

The item "doughnut hole" is a totally stand-alone product and is not, as suspected by the laymen, a by-product and having a one-to-one correspondence with the doughnut, i.e. one doughnut hole per ring doughnut.

All commercial doughnut formers, squeeze or extrude out a complete ring doughnut. Doughnut holes are cut out from long sauage-looking rolls and are produced separately and independently from ring doughnuts.

TRIVIA: Krispy Kreme has been around since 1937 but didn't start selling doughnut holes until 2005.

SO...back to the doughnut hole...without the doughnut hole, the doughnut would most likely be inedible. Frying the hole-less doughnut would give you one of two possible results, either the fried doughball would be cooked on the outside but doughy and uncooked at the center, or cooked at the core but dry and/or burned on the outside.

The doughnut hole, though in itself matterless, a space bounded and defined by the doughnut ring, is essential to the doughnut's creation and the fulfillment of its purpose...to be edible.
