we can never stress this often enough: love and respect for, and devotion to, our Blessed Mother is what separates the atenean from the rest of the catholic studentry in this country. it may seem archaic especially in this day and age of mp3 downloads, the internet, and miley cyrus, but this means all the more that we as ateneans must cling harder to this devotion in the face of swamping secularism.

carry the rosary with you and pray it daily, is the Blessed Mother's one simple request at lourdes and fatima. ateneans of old often liked to say that they have the rosary in their pockets. but how many of them take just 15 minutes of their day to pray it? save for the grade schoolers who are to this day required to carry it with them, how many of our high schoolers and college students do? i'd be hard pressed to find a handful. at their most trying times, ateneans of yesteryears turned to the rosary and our Blessed Mother for prayers, help, and guidance. jose rizal clutched his in his hand on the way to face the musket at bagumbayan. ninoy aquino's accompanied him through all his trials -- from fort bonifacio and laur, through the 3 years of family bliss in boston, and all the way down the side of a china airlines jetplane on august 21, 1983. evelio javier was said to be occasionally seen wandering around loyola heights praying his rosary when the burdens of his office as governor of antique became too heavy to bear.

so it is something close to our hearts as ateneans, and need not be something so onerous especially for us. let us then rekindle our love for the Lady in blue and white. be proud, and feel privileged, as wesley gonzales once said, to carry her colors. be what an atenean truly is and should be -- a knight in the service of Our Lady.

Mary for you, for your white and blue!
We pray, you'll keep us, Mary, constantly true
We pray, you'll keep us, Mary, faithful to you!

Mariang Ina ko, ako ri'y anak mo,
Kay Kristong kuya ko, akayin mo ako.
